At Seven Clean Seas, we see this crisis up close, every single day. Every intervention we design asks the same question: How can we extract value from waste that the world has written off?
Which is why new research - like the recent study on embedding LDPE plastic waste into asphalt roads - is particularly compelling. It points to a future where waste isn’t just removed from the environment, but permanently embedded into the very structures we rely on. Not as a compromise, but as an improvement.
Mixing LDPE With Stone Mastic Asphalt - Is This the Next Big Thing?
LDPE, commonly found in plastic bags and wrapping films, is notorious in the recycling world. It’s cheap, difficult to recycle, and usually ends up in landfills or the ocean.
Yet when shredded into flakes and incorporated into Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) mixtures that are typically used for heavy-duty roads and runways - LDPE becomes a surprisingly powerful modifier! The study found that at a 5% inclusion rate, LDPE significantly improved the rutting resistance of the asphalt, while maintaining adequate performance in fatigue cracking and stiffness tests.
In simpler terms - the pavements became stronger!

And they did so without needing costly polymer-modified bitumen, which is standard for heavy-use pavements. This is significant. It means cities and governments could reduce costs, cut down on virgin materials, and lock plastic waste into long-term infrastructure, all without sacrificing performance.
Beyond Roads: A Blueprint for the Circular Economy
If plastic-infused asphalt works under the crushing pressure of industrial vehicles and tropical climates, why limit it to roads?

Consider pavements in coastal communities prone to flooding - lightweight, water-resistant pathways that can be deployed quickly using modular blocks made from LDPE and other post-consumer plastics. Or urban parks paved with recycled material that doesn’t just look good, but tells a story of waste transformed into function. These materials could be extended into public plazas, transit hubs, pedestrian corridors, or even disaster relief shelters.
The implications of the research are clear: we can no longer think of plastic as something to get rid of. We must think of it as something to use differently.
Locking plastic into infrastructure is not a silver bullet. It won't solve all of plastic pollution’s dangers, particularly microplastic leakage or short-cycle consumer goods. But as one component of a larger circular economy - alongside upstream reduction, product redesign, and better waste management - it is a credible, science-backed opportunity with real impact.

And there is precedent. In Batam, we’ve already begun transforming LDPE into roof tiles and furniture-grade materials, demonstrating that these solutions can scale. Apart from using our plastic to manufacture daily use items, we can also convert MLPs (multi-layered plastics) into lab-tested and verified construction bricks!
